　元禄２年（1689）「おくのほそ道」行脚で多賀城碑を訪れた芭蕉と曽良。
今日は多賀城碑として知られる古碑を芭蕉は歌枕の“壺の碑”と思い感涙する。
　
　江戸中期の俳人蝶夢が芭蕉100回忌を記念して編んだ芭蕉の一代記です。蝶夢は京都の人で浄土宗の僧でした。芭蕉没後40年近く経ってから生まれたので芭蕉に会ったことはありませんが、芭蕉の墓のある義仲寺で毎年芭蕉忌を開いたり、諸国を回って芭蕉の顕彰（功績をたたえ広めること）につとめました。
　この資料は出版されたものですが、そのもととなる絵巻物が義仲寺に所蔵されています。

In this work, the mid-Edo-period haiku poet Chomu, a priest of the Jodo-shu Buddhist sect who hailed from Kyoto, depicts Basho’s life story to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his death. Born nearly 40 years after Basho’s death, Chomu never met the haiku master in person, but he conducted yearly memorial rites for Basho at Gichuji Temple, where Basho’s grave is located, and he traveled throughout the provinces to publicly honor Basho and promote recognition of his achievements.
